How to Teach a Child to Count: Hands-On Strategies That Build Number Sense

Learning to count is one of a child's first experiences with mathematics. It may sound simple—say “one, two, three...” and keep going—but truly understanding counting involves much more than memorizing a sequence of number words.

A child can recite numbers from 1 to 20 and still not understand that 7 means a quantity of seven objects.

That's why teaching counting should include opportunities to say numbers, see numbers, touch and move objects, recognize quantities, discover patterns, and connect written numerals with what they mean.

Here's how to teach counting step by step.

What Does a Child Need to Learn in Order to Count?

Before jumping into counting activities, it helps to understand that counting is actually a collection of related skills.

Children gradually learn to:

  • Say number words in the correct order.
  • Count one object for each number word they say.
  • Understand that the final number tells how many objects are in the group.
  • Recognize written numerals and connect them with quantities.
  • Understand that quantities remain the same even when objects are rearranged.
  • Recognize small quantities without counting every object.
  • Compare quantities.
  • Notice patterns in our number system.
  • Eventually count forward from numbers other than 1 and count in groups.

You don't have to teach all of these at once.

Build them gradually through meaningful practice.

1. Begin With the Counting Sequence

Young children often begin by learning number words almost like the words of a song.

One, two, three, four, five...

Songs, rhymes, rhythm, and movement can make this sequence enjoyable to practice.

Try counting while:

clapping

marching

jumping

walking up stairs

bouncing a ball

or:

pointing to numbers on a chart

But being able to recite the sequence is only the beginning.

The next step is helping children understand what those number words actually represent.

2. Count Real Objects

Give your child a small collection of objects.

You can use:

blocks, buttons, toy animals, crayons, cereal pieces, pebbles, pennies, pom-poms, or small cars.

Ask:

“How many are there?”

Encourage the child to touch or move one object for each number word:

One... two... three... four... five.

This develops an important counting skill called one-to-one correspondence: one number word corresponds to one object.

If a child frequently skips objects or counts an object twice, have them physically move each object from one side to another while counting.

For example:

● ● ● ● ●

Move one:

“One.”

Move another:

“Two.”

Continue until all five have been moved.

Then ask:

“So how many are there altogether?”

3. Teach That the Last Number Means “How Many”

This is an easy step to overlook.

A child counts:

“1, 2, 3, 4, 5.”

Then you ask:

“How many are there?”

And the child starts counting all over again.

That tells you the child may know the counting routine but hasn't fully connected the last number counted with the total quantity.

After counting five objects, emphasize:

“Five! There are five altogether.”

Then rearrange the same five objects.

Ask:

“Do you think there are still five?”

Count to check.

Spread them farther apart.

Count again.

Push them close together.

Count again.

The arrangement changed, but the number of objects did not.

This helps children understand that five describes the quantity, not the shape or size of the group.

4. Connect Quantities With Written Numbers

Once children are working with actual quantities, connect those quantities with the symbols we use to represent them.

Place 4 counters on the table.

Count them together.

Then show:

Say:

“This is how we write four. This number stands for the four objects we just counted.”

Do this repeatedly with different quantities.

The goal is for children to connect three things:

spoken number → quantity → written numeral

 meaningful pictures—to help children remember what written numerals look like.

The picture can serve as a temporary memory anchor while the child learns the numeral itself.

5. Let Children Experience Numbers With Their Hands

Numbers don't have to live only on paper.

Children can:

  • Finger-paint numbers on glossy paper.
  • Trace numbers cut from sandpaper.
  • Form numbers from modeling clay.
  • Draw numbers in a tray of sand.
  • Make numbers from pipe cleaners.
  • Turn number shapes into familiar objects.
  • Trace numbers in a sealed bag partly filled with tempera paint.

As children make each numeral, connect the symbol back to quantity.

For example, after making a 6 from clay:

“You made the number 6. Now can you give me six blocks?”

That small addition keeps numeral formation connected to mathematical meaning.

6. Make Numbers Big Enough to Move On

Another original Child1st activity is to make very large numbers on the floor with masking tape—or draw them outside with sidewalk chalk.

Let children walk along each numeral, beginning where they would begin when writing it.

Children can even use their bodies to form number shapes, working with another person or using stuffed animals when necessary.

Then extend the activity beyond numeral formation.

Write several large numbers on the floor and say:

“Stand on 4!”

Then:

“Can you put four blocks beside the 4?”

Or:

“Jump from 4 to the number that comes next.”

Now movement reinforces number recognition, quantity, and sequence.

7. Help Children Recognize Quantities Without Counting Every Time

Counting is important, but children can also begin learning to recognize small quantities at a glance.

Think about a standard die.

When you see:

you probably don't count every dot.

You recognize five.

You can develop this ability with:

ten-frames

fingers

and:

small groups of objects

Briefly show a group of three dots:

● ● ●

Hide them.

Ask:

“How many did you see?”

Then show four:

● ●
● ●

Talk about what the child noticed:

“How did you know there were four?”

Perhaps the child saw two and two.

That's valuable mathematical thinking.

Children are beginning to see numbers as relationships and patterns, rather than simply as the result of counting one object at a time.

8. Use a 5 Frame to Discover Number Patterns

Create or print 5-box rows and tape them together into a long number chart.

For example:

Continue as far as is appropriate for your child.

You can write the numbers yourself or take turns writing them with your child. There's no need to turn the preparation into a tiring handwriting exercise.

Then use colors to discover patterns.

Look vertically:

1, 6, 11, 16...

2, 7, 12, 17...

3, 8, 13, 18...

Ask:

“What do you notice?”

“What stays the same?”

“What changes?”

Then practice counting while pointing to each numeral.

The purpose isn't simply to memorize a chart. Children are beginning to see that our number system contains predictable patterns.

9. Help With the Tricky Teen Numbers

Teen numbers can be confusing because their spoken names don't always make their structure obvious to young children.

Use objects or a ten-frame to show what the numbers mean.

For 14, show:

one group of ten + four more

Then write:

14

Point out:

“The 1 tells us we have one ten. The 4 tells us we have four more ones.”

Repeat with:

13, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19.

You may implement an idea from our stylized numbers and make the 1 in each of the numbers from 13-19 into a “teen” – a stick figure teenager. So when you count those numbers, you would point to the number in the 1’s place first and then finish by pointing to the teenager.

That's a fun memory device for remembering the numeral, but pair it with the quantity so children also understand why 14 represents ten and four more.


10. Discover the Pattern in 20, 30, 40, 50...

Children may also stumble when they reach the decade numbers:

 words.

Keep that visual if it helps the child remember the spoken sequence. 

Then show the mathematical pattern as well:

20 = 2 tens

30 = 3 tens

40 = 4 tens

50 = 5 tens

Build these with bundles, blocks, ten-frames, or other manipulatives.

Children can then see that the decade numbers aren't arbitrary words. They are part of an organized base-ten system.

11. Use a 100 Chart to Make Patterns Visible

Once a child is ready to count beyond 20, a hundred chart can make the structure of numbers easier to see.

Don't just use it for chanting from 1 to 100.

Explore it.

Ask:

“What happens when we move one space to the right?”

“What happens when we move down one row?”

“Can you find all the numbers ending in 5?”

“Where are 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50?”

Color-code patterns.

Cover a number and ask the child to determine what's missing.

Start at 27 instead of 1 and continue counting.

This moves children beyond memorizing a long sequence toward understanding how numbers relate to one another.

12. Practice Counting From Numbers Other Than 1

Once children can reliably count objects, don't always begin with one.

Ask:

“Start at 5 and keep counting.”

5, 6, 7, 8, 9...

Then:

“Start at 13.”

This prepares children for an important later strategy called counting on.

For example:

5 + 3

Instead of counting:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5... 6, 7, 8

the child can begin with five:

“Five... six, seven, eight.”

This is one of the bridges between early counting and addition.

13. Count Everyday Things

Some of the best counting practice doesn't look like a lesson at all.

Ask children to count:

steps to the car

socks going into a drawer

forks for the table

apples in a bag

blocks in a tower

cars passing the window

crackers at snack time

toys going into a basket

You can also ask children to create a particular quantity:

“Can you bring me six crayons?”

That is different from simply counting a group already in front of them.

The child has to hold six in mind and construct a set containing that quantity.

14. Play Counting Games

Bingo

Give children number Bingo cards and small markers.

Call numbers in random order and have children cover the matching numeral.

This builds number recognition without always relying on numerical order.

Go Fish

Remove the face cards from a standard deck and play Go Fish with the number cards.

Children repeatedly recognize numerals and match quantities while playing.

Hopscotch

Create a traditional hopscotch grid with sidewalk chalk or masking tape.

Children can say the numbers as they jump or follow directions such as:

“Jump to 4.”

“What comes after 6?”

“Start at 3 and jump forward two spaces.”

“Swift Says”

Using the hopscotch grid, add playful directions such as:

Hop once on three.

Yawn on eight.

Sit on nine.

Put both feet on four.

Stomp on seven.

Clap on two.

This combines listening, number recognition, movement, and play.

15. Introduce Skip Counting Through Groups and Patterns

As children become comfortable with basic counting, they can begin noticing repeated groups.

Line up pairs of socks:

2, 4, 6, 8...

Count fingers:

5, 10, 15, 20...

Count groups of ten:

10, 20, 30, 40...

Use objects first so skip counting represents something the child can see.

Then connect the groups to the spoken pattern.

This prepares children for later work with addition, multiplication, place value, and number relationships.

A Simple Progression for Teaching Counting

If you're wondering where to begin, use this progression:

1. Say the counting sequence.

2. Touch or move one object for each number word.

3. Understand that the last number tells how many.

4. Connect quantities to written numerals.

5. Recognize small quantities and visual patterns.

6. Compare and build different quantities.

7. Explore patterns on number charts.

8. Count forward from numbers other than 1.

9. Begin counting groups and noticing skip-counting patterns.

Children won't necessarily master these skills in a perfectly straight line. They may work on several at the same time.

That's fine.

What If My Child Can Count but Doesn't Understand Numbers?

If your child can recite:

“1, 2, 3, 4, 5...”

but struggles to give you five objects, return to concrete quantities.

Rather than spending more time chanting the number sequence, ask the child to:

give you 4 blocks

put 6 crackers on a plate

build a tower with 7 cubes

show 5 on their fingers

match a numeral card to a group of objects

The goal is to strengthen the connection between number words, written symbols, and actual quantities.

Should Children Memorize Counting?

Children naturally memorize portions of the counting sequence through repetition, songs, games, and everyday use.

That's useful.

But memorizing the sequence shouldn't be the only way counting is taught.

A strong foundation also includes understanding quantity, matching one number word to one object, recognizing numerals, seeing patterns, and discovering relationships among numbers.

In other words:

Children need to learn both the sequence of numbers and what those numbers mean.

Make Counting Visual, Hands-On, and Meaningful

Young children learn about mathematics by interacting with their world.

Let them touch it, move it, build it, draw it, sing it, see patterns in it, and talk about what they notice.

And that foundation will support everything that comes next in mathematics.
