Sight Word Lesson Plans

Gateway to Fluency

Sight word mastery greatly simplifies reading, improving fluency and comprehension. They are critical in early literacy because they make up 80-90% of the words children encounter in text. Get started today with this simple lesson plan for teaching sight words:

  • Select a group of sight words and display them where they can be easily seen.
  • Introduce the words by pointing to one word at a time, telling the students what each word says before they have a chance to guess, and possibly guess incorrectly.
  • Talk briefly about what each word means and use them in sentences for context and understanding.
  • If you are incorporating visuals, discuss the images with the students. Add body motions related to the word, if incorporating kinesthetic elements.
  • Include games and activities that promote recognition and deepen understanding of their meanings and proper usage.
  • Spend as many days as necessary for students to master the group of words. Once they can read all of them, post them on a word wall in alphabetical order.
  • Select a new group of words and repeat the process.
