How to Get My Child Interested in Reading

Engage Their Interests

First, it is important to determine if there are specific issues that need to be addressed:

  • Instruction doesn’t match your child’s learning style, leading to various reading struggles
  • Lack of focus/short attention span
  • Bored/not engaged
  • Previous negative experiences with reading

If these issues are not a factor or they have been addressed, there are a few things that can increase a child’s interest in reading:

  • Let your child choose books that are of interest to them
  • Allow your child to get a library card to check out books
  • Read to your child, take turns reading out loud, and schedule independent reading time for your child and yourself
  • Engage with your child about what they are reading, encouraging them to share via conversation, writing, drawing, acting, etc.
  • Create a fun, encouraging, and stress-free reading environment without pressure, punishment, or unrealistic expectations
