16 Characteristics of Kinesthetic and Tactile Learners

Does your child seem to learn best when they can move, touch, build, draw, or actively participate in what they are learning?
Maybe sitting still through a long explanation is difficult, but give them something to do with their hands and suddenly they are engaged. Perhaps they remember an experience from years ago but struggle to recall information they only heard or read. Or maybe they seem to understand a new concept almost immediately once they can physically interact with it.
These can be characteristics of kinesthetic and tactile learners.
Understanding how a child naturally approaches learning can help parents and teachers recognize strengths that may not always be obvious in a traditional classroom—and find more effective ways to help that child succeed.
What Is a Kinesthetic Learner?
Kinesthetic learners connect strongly with movement, action, and physical experience.
Rather than learning primarily by listening to an explanation or reading information on a page, they often benefit from doing something with what they are learning.
They might act out a vocabulary word, use body motions to remember information, physically demonstrate a math concept, or learn through an experience they can participate in.
For many kinesthetic learners, movement isn't simply an opportunity to burn off energy. It can become part of the learning process itself.
What Is a Tactile Learner?
Tactile learners connect strongly with learning through touch and hands-on experience.
They may enjoy building, drawing, writing, manipulating objects, sorting cards, working with letter tiles, using math manipulatives, or creating something with their hands.
Kinesthetic and tactile learning often overlap, which is why the terms are frequently discussed together.
A child may show characteristics of both. For example, a student might remember a spelling pattern by tracing it while saying the sound, or learn a math relationship by physically moving objects and then writing the corresponding equation.
So what might this look like in everyday life?
Here are 16 common characteristics of kinesthetic and tactile learners.
1. They Learn by Doing
One of the clearest characteristics is a preference for active involvement.
A kinesthetic or tactile learner may understand something much more readily after trying it than after hearing someone explain how to do it.
They often want to experiment, manipulate, build, take apart, recreate, or physically work through a problem.
When possible, give them opportunities to move from:
“Let me tell you how this works”
to:
“Let's try it and see how it works.”
2. They Remember What They Did
Ask a kinesthetic learner about an experience from a field trip, experiment, project, game, or hands-on lesson and you may be surprised by how much detail they remember.
Physical experiences can provide meaningful anchors for memory.
This is one reason purposeful movement and hands-on practice can be so valuable: the experience becomes connected with the information being learned.
3. They May Have Difficulty Sitting Still for Long Periods
Some children think and learn better when their bodies are allowed to move.
They may shift in their seats, tap a foot, doodle, manipulate an object, stand while working, or look for opportunities to get up.
That doesn't automatically mean the child isn't listening.
Sometimes a small amount of movement actually helps the child remain engaged with the task.
4. They Like to Touch and Handle Things
“Please don't touch” can be particularly difficult for a tactile learner!
These children often explore through their hands. They want to feel textures, manipulate objects, examine how things fit together, and physically interact with their environment.
In learning, this might mean preferring:
- letter tiles;
- flash cards;
- manipulatives;
- models;
- puzzles;
- drawing or writing;
- sorting activities; or
- hands-on experiments.
For them, touching isn't necessarily separate from thinking. It can be part of how they process information.
5. They May Gesture While Talking
Watch their hands when they're explaining something.
Kinesthetic learners may naturally gesture, demonstrate, point, act something out, or use their whole body to help communicate an idea.
Those movements can also be used intentionally during instruction.
A meaningful gesture associated with a word, sound, or concept can provide another connection for remembering it later.
6. They Often Prefer Experiences to Explanations
Long verbal explanations can be challenging, especially when the child has no concrete reference for what is being described.
They may understand much more quickly when they can:
see an example → try it → receive feedback → try it again.
This doesn't mean verbal instruction isn't useful. It means the explanation often becomes more meaningful when it is connected to something concrete.
7. They May Enjoy Building, Creating, and Taking Things Apart
LEGO®, crafts, models, woodworking, puzzles, science experiments, cooking, mechanics, art, and other hands-on pursuits can be especially appealing.
A child who seems restless during a worksheet may concentrate for an astonishing length of time while constructing something.
Pay attention to those moments.
They can reveal strengths in problem solving, spatial reasoning, creativity, persistence, and practical application that aren't always apparent through paper-and-pencil work.
8. They May Need Movement to Maintain Attention
Some learners find it difficult to separate thinking from movement.
A child might pace while memorizing something, stand while reading, bounce slightly while practicing facts, or manipulate something while listening.
Instead of automatically treating all movement as distraction, consider whether the movement is helping or interfering with learning.
Purposeful movement can sometimes be incorporated directly into the lesson.
9. They Often Enjoy Physical Activities
Sports, dance, drama, outdoor activities, building projects, gardening, experiments, and other active pursuits may come naturally to these learners.
Physical activity can also reveal abilities that don't always appear in conventional academic tasks: coordination, timing, spatial awareness, observation, strategy, teamwork, and persistence.
A child's strengths extend well beyond what can be measured while sitting at a desk.
10. They May Prefer to Show You Rather Than Tell You
Ask:
“How did you do that?”
and you might hear:
“Here—I'll show you.”
Kinesthetic and tactile learners may find demonstrating a process easier than verbally describing every step.
Teachers and parents can use this tendency as another way to check understanding.
Instead of always asking a child to explain an answer verbally, sometimes ask:
“Can you show me how you figured that out?”
11. They Can Become Restless During Passive Learning
Long lectures, lengthy reading assignments, repetitive worksheets, or extended periods of listening can be especially difficult when there is little opportunity for active participation.
The problem isn't necessarily that the child can't learn the material.
The format may simply provide too few opportunities to interact with it.
Breaking instruction into shorter segments and incorporating meaningful opportunities to respond, write, manipulate, demonstrate, or move can help keep learning active.
12. They May Remember Where Something Happened
Physical context can become part of memory.
A child may remember:
- where they were standing;
- what they were doing;
- where something was located;
- who was present; or
- what happened immediately before or afterward.
Experiential memory can be a powerful strength.
Connecting new information to a meaningful experience can give the learner another pathway for recalling it later.
13. They Often Enjoy Role-Playing and Demonstration
Acting out a story, demonstrating a vocabulary word, pretending to be a historical character, using motions for a song, or physically modeling a concept can turn abstract information into an experience.
This is especially effective when the action is meaningfully connected to what is being learned.
Random movement may make an activity more entertaining, but purposeful movement can become a memory support.
14. They May Prefer Shorter Instructions Followed by Action
A long sequence of spoken directions can be difficult to hold in mind.
Kinesthetic and tactile learners may do better when instruction follows a pattern such as:
Explain → Do → Explain → Do
rather than:
Explain everything → Begin
Demonstrating a step, allowing the child to perform it, and then moving to the next step can make a complicated task much more manageable.
15. They Often Solve Problems Through Trial and Error
Some children want complete instructions before beginning.
Kinesthetic learners may be more inclined to start experimenting.
They try something, observe what happens, make an adjustment, and try again.
That approach can sometimes look impulsive, but it can also reflect valuable strengths: curiosity, experimentation, adaptability, and persistence.
Teaching them when experimentation is appropriate—and when slowing down and planning first would be helpful—allows them to build on that natural strength.
16. They Often Thrive When Learning Becomes an Experience
This characteristic brings the others together.
For kinesthetic and tactile learners, some of the most memorable learning happens when information becomes something they can see, hear, touch, manipulate, demonstrate, and experience.
A spelling pattern can become something they build.
A vocabulary word can become something they act out.
A math relationship can become something they physically model.
A historical event can become a role-play.
A scientific principle can become an experiment.
The more meaningful the connection between the experience and the concept, the more useful that experience can become.
Kinesthetic and Tactile Learners Are Not All the Same
A child doesn't have to demonstrate all 16 characteristics to benefit from tactile or kinesthetic approaches.
One child might need frequent movement but have little interest in building things. Another might happily sit for an hour constructing an intricate model. One may love sports; another may prefer drawing, sewing, cooking, experiments, or working with manipulatives.
Learning characteristics also don't exist in isolation.
A child may have strong visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic characteristics in different combinations.

Kinesthetic Learning Is More Than Movement
This is an important distinction.
Adding movement to an activity does not automatically make the learning more meaningful.
Imagine a child hopping from one sight word to another on the floor while making exactly the same movement for every word. The activity certainly includes movement—but what does the hopping teach the child about the individual words?
Now compare that with a purposeful motion that represents the meaning of a particular word.
The movement itself has become a memory anchor.

What If My Child Shows Many of These Characteristics?
First, recognize the strengths behind what you're observing.
A child who needs to touch everything may be an eager explorer.
A child who doesn't want to sit still may think particularly well through action.
A child who wants to take things apart may be trying to understand how they work.
A child who struggles with lengthy verbal directions may perform beautifully once they can see or experience the task.
Understanding these characteristics can help us move from:
“Why won't this child learn the way I'm teaching?”
to:
“How can I make this learning more accessible to this child?”
That shift can make an enormous difference.

Kinesthetic and tactile learners can bring tremendous strengths to learning: curiosity, creativity, energy, experimentation, spatial awareness, persistence, and an eagerness to interact with the world around them.
Sometimes those strengths are easy to recognize.
Sometimes they first appear as restlessness, touching, fidgeting, impatience with long explanations, or difficulty sitting through traditional instruction.
When we understand what may be behind those behaviors, we can begin to see the learner differently.
And once we understand how a child naturally connects with learning, we can give that child more opportunities to experience success.

I used to run workshops for primary schools as a 3D story teller. The method I devised was based on the way I believed memorising was best achieved by the majority of young children.
I had the children sit in a large circle on the floor with me the storyteller in the middle, along with several tins of coloured felt tips. The children were all given paper and invited to draw whatever came into their heads while I was telling the story. For some, to make a picture they could be pleased with was the most important goal but for many, the idea as I explained it to them, that they could draw just colour or shape depending on what the story said to them, worked well. The next part of the workshop was for the children to recall different elements in the story. For some it was a moment experienced by a character but for others it was a `dark forest` or a `big storm`. or a `grand ball`. Many of the children had excellent recall of the story and detail within it. I believed the physical activity of drawing strengthened their retentive memories.
I did not know about kinaesthetic learning at the time but I`m delighted to know that I was `on the ball.`
Though as a child my reports always said I should try harder, Dyslexia, which I now realise I suffer from, was unknow in the `50`s.
As far as movement goes, it does helpe learn, think and be more aware. In my personal experience, what I have noticed that really helps me make leaps and bounds in processing is walking a new ‘path’ with unusual obstacles. This may relate to traveling as well. Probably like most people, usually when I go for walks, I go to the same places. But one time my car was in the shop and was required to walk an unusual path/route with a lot of unusual obstacles. It was in a strange, hidden location, was unusually winding, had over grown bushes making the sidewalk difficult to walk and and finally I saw mice! It was also located in this incredibly unusual area. It seems like the metaphor of walking or treading a ‘new path’ had the affect of me ‘treading new paths’ mentally and psychologicaly as well. I walk all the time in the same places and walking the same route just doesn’t have this affect on me.
Though it might seem hard and perhaps unethical to replicate walking a new, unusual path with new and unusual/unlikely objects works wonders on me. My path was urban/city/ industrial, not out in nature where I usually walk. Nature walks might help some. It is relaxing, reviving and calming where as my urban path was something entirely different.
After reading the other comments I want to add that I was very drawn to dance and movement such as gymnastics as a young child. I remember thinking the ‘Solid Gold’ dancers from the 70’s or
80’s musical TV show and believing they were real life goddesses. And I remember being so inspired by the gold medal Olympic winner Nadia of the 1980’s and more recently Simone Biles.
My sister studied ballet and I probably picked up a lot from watching her recitals and from being around her and her dance groove. I didn’t start studying dance or acting until I was in my early twenties. And when I did it was belly dance. I also did improv acting and traditional acting classes.
I had wanted to teach dance but the world doesn’t always work out the way we plan.
I have read that people’s learning styles are flexible and can change throughout one’s life. We have a primary learning style and a close second. For example, I believe my primary learning style is kinetic and my second strongest learning style is listening/auditory. All of our learning styles including visual learning and reading/writing are always a part of us. Though I rely on kintecism and listening for learning I also use my visual learning and reading/writing abilities as well.
As I mentioned, your learning styles’ can change throughout your life. As I have gotten older my kineticsm has grown stronger. I’ve read that men are usually the only strong kinetics but I disagree. Im as kinetic as they come and I’m a woman.
Only in recent years have I heard about students who are labeled as “bad” because of their learning styles. I didn’t experience any difficulty sitting still in class or for long periods of time in school or now.
But I do have a few concentration issues. In college I did poorly in the few night classes I took. I mostly took classes during the day. Concentrating at night, most likely when I was more tired proved to be too difficult for me. Day classes were fine. I had no concentration issue with them.
But college was a long time ago for me. And as I have not been in college and my kineticism has grown stronger, my spelling has become autrocious. I often have to spell check every paragraph I write for errors. In these days of social media and commenting, having to spell check constantly is an extreme time hinderance. My spelling is terrible. It has gotten worse as I have become older (40’s). One time I was writing a blog and was writing and publishing up to five pages a day for around a week. My spelling improved during this time, so its possible this kinetic dfficulty might be over come with a lot of practice. This spelling issue might have to do with how kinetics process things. And it might have an emotional component to it because its my spelling in English that is terrible. But I know a little Spanish and I spell perfectly in Spanish without errors. I’m always appalled to see incorrect spelling in Spanish.
In the past I studied dance and acting, without realizing these were the best forms of learning for me.
Now I am working in technology. I have had a lot of difficulty learning WordPress through online video classes. In person workshops and podcasts on WordPress help me more, with the in-person workshops helping the most. Learrning WordPress may be another caveat of being kinetic. I have taken other online coding classes via video and I learned the material very easily, so it seems like its just WordPress that has proven difficult for me.
Regardless of these minor concentration issues, being kinetic is the greatest. Other learning styles are missing out. I wouldn’t trade my kineticism for the world.
I also wanted to mention that museums are awesome for kinetics. We love objects!!! Objects are how we learn! I once went to a technology museum in Northern, CA. I learned so much.
Thank God for this, i never knew i had a kenesthetic learner, at 2 and a half years she could destroy and fix objects, she is so smart and fast in doing so, she never sits still always told to get off things, she likes gathering objects and building them up wether bangles, containers, shoes etc. she is now four and a half, whenever i want to teach her elder sister something like sewing, before her elder sister grabs what am teaching, my kenetic daughter has already done it without me teaching her and i used to think my eldest daughter was the smart one because she is good in memorizing. i now plan to homeschool them God’s Willing cos i need to give them the attention they need.
